Title

Emotional Plants

Problem Scenario

Sometimes when I plant my flowers they grow too slow or not at all, so I want to know if plants need love to grow big and colourful like we do.

Broad Question

What is the effect on Human emotions on plant growth?

Specific Question

Will little acts of kindness and cruelty effect the growth on plants/ will the plants respond to my feelings for them?

Hypothesis

The plants that I am being nice to and complementing as I water will grow more than the plants that I am neglecting and
bullying.

How tall the plants will grow and how long it will take for them to do so.

Variables

Independent Variable: The emotions that I give the plants.

Dependent Variable: The fullness and height of the plants at the end.

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: The plants that are treated normally.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

Photosyntheses: The process of turning light from the sun into energy for the plants to grow.

General Plan

1. Gather materials, 12 seeds of choice (Wisconsin fast plants for quick growing) 6 small pots for planting, soil
2. Put soil in the pots
3. Plant 2 seeds per pot 1 inch under soil
4. Write 2 hate notes and tape them to 2 of the pots (One per pot). Write 2 nice notes and tape them to to of the pots (One per pot.) When you do this experiment you will need 2 controlled plants (Pots) Remember: when you are watering the plants be sure to remind the plants what about them you hate and what abut them you love, so they do get a general idea.
5. Water aprox. 5 ML a day (1 teaspoon)
6. Be sure that plants are getting enough sunlight to grow.
7. In the end once you are completely ready to do this you have 6 pots with 2 seeds per pot. 2 pots you will be nice to, 2 pots you will be mean to and 2 pots that you would treat like any normal plant.
8. When the plants get taller and bigger they need more water to grow like kids need more to eat when they grow so once the plants get to 5-8 cm water them one table spoon a day

Potential Problems And Solutions

If you don't water the plants all the same and they don't get the same amount of sunlight they might not grow as intended.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Be sure to not be too cruel to your plants! You just want to get the point across, don't say anything that you will regret.

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

Controlled, manipulated experiment

What is your experimental unit?

I will be measuring the groups of the 6 potted plants (2 per group) how they grow under the thoughts and things that I say to them/ how I treat them.

Number Of Trials:

I will do this once with 2 pots that I will be mean to (2 seeds per pot) 2 pots that I will be nice to (2 seeds per pot) and two pots that will be treated normally (2 seeds per pot)

Number Of Subjects In Each trial:

2 pots that I will be mean to (2 seeds per pot) 2 pots that I will be nice to (2 seeds per pot) and two pots that will be treated normally (2 seeds per pot)

Number of Observations:

Once the plants start to sprout I will measure the growth each day. (cm)

When data will be collected

On the day that the plants sprout I will measure how tall it is the first day (cm) Then on the 7th day I will measure how tall they grow, and then on the 14th day I will do the same and so on until my plants reach maximum height or until they stop growing.

Detailed Procedure

When conduction this procedure I had to get all of my materials, seeds, pots, soil, and notes.(Exact amount of each on resources and budget table.) I put 2 cups of soil in a small pot and planted 2 seeds (Of any type) for science projects use Wisconsin fast plants. Water them in the morning so they have all day to drink up their water and if they "Go to bed with wet feet" the plants won't grow as quick or be as full as you would like them to be. Take out your sticky notes and write out 2 love/happy/inspirational letters and 2 hate letters and pout them on two pots each and leave the 5th and 6th pots empty those are your controlled plants.
SUMMARY:
You will have 3 groups of 2 pots each one bullied, one liked, one controlled. water them 5ml of water every morning each.

Conclusion

At the end of my experiment, it did not work out the way I wanted it to the plants grew at the same pace and were roughly the same height.

Background Research

My background research was on the growth of plants mostly. Although I got the idea from Dr. Masaru Emoto's book "The Hidden Messages in Water." It talks about what the outcome is with the ice crystals when you are mean to them and when you are nice to them. In the book it says that if you are mean to the water before it freezes the ice crystals aren't as shaped and it isn't as obvious that they are ice crystals. On the other hand, If you are nice to the water before it freezes then the ice crystals are symmetrical and beautiful. The emotion part of it is that I was thinking that humans do better when they have love to grow and I thought plants would too. So I conducted a experiment not using the ice crystal method but planting seeds and seeing if my emotions towards them would change the out come and how much they grew.
